First accredited non-bank lender welcomes commencement of AFIA Code

Pepper Money has welcomed the commencement of the Australian Finance Industry Association (AFIA) Finance Industry Code of Practice on 1 October 2026; a significant milestone that reinforces the industry's commitment to responsible lending, transparency and customer protection.

Having become the first non-bank lender accredited under the Code earlier this year, Pepper Money is committed to the high standards of conduct, transparency and customer care that underpin the Code.

The Code reflects many of the principles that have long guided Pepper Money's approach to lending and customer support.

For customers, these commitments include:

  • Providing straightforward information about lending products, terms and fees.
  • Supporting customers experiencing financial hardship or vulnerability.
  • Strengthening protections against scams, fraud and financial abuse.
  • Using technology and artificial intelligence responsibly.
  • Providing clear and accessible complaints and dispute resolution processes.

Pepper Money CEO and AFIA Chair Mario Rehayem said the Code represents an important step forward for Australia's non-bank lending sector.

Non-bank lenders are an integral part of Australia’s financial system. We create competition, give Australians greater choice and help find solutions for customers whose circumstances may not always fit a traditional lending model.

“With that role comes a responsibility to maintain high standards and give customers confidence in the organisations they choose to deal with. The Code is an important way for our industry to demonstrate that commitment and continue strengthening the role non-bank lenders play in Australia.

"Trust is built through clear communication, responsible lending practices and supporting customers when they need it most. The Code helps reinforce these expectations across our industry."

Pepper Money remains committed to helping more Australians succeed by providing responsible, flexible lending options and delivering positive customer outcomes, while supporting initiatives that strengthen trust, accountability and confidence across the non-bank lender industry.
